  • PreCheck expands to St. Louis airport
The Transportation Security Administration will expand its PreCheck Program to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The program, which allows select travelers to move faster through security in exchange for providing personal information, may be available at the airport this summer. It is part of the TSA’s plan to shift to risk-based security. "The idea is that TSA understands that the vast majority of air travelers don’t pose a threat to aviation security. The challenge is how to provide expedited screening for those," TSA spokesman Jim Fotenos said. St. Louis Post-Dispatch (7/8) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Montana airport applies for private screeners
Montana’s Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport hopes to use Sioux Falls Regional Airport in South Dakota as a model if it is allowed to shift to private screeners. The Bozeman airport last month applied to have a private firm handle its passenger screening, and the Transportation Security Administration has 120 days to make a decision. Officials at the Sioux Falls airport, which is similar in size to the Bozeman airport, say many travelers are pleased with the switch to private screeners. Bozeman Daily Chronicle (Mont.) • American Airlines plans to limit first class to select routes
American Airlines says it still sees a demand for first-class seats, but only in select premium markets such as Sao Paolo and London Heathrow. To that end, it plans to reconfigure its 777-200 fleet with only business, economy and "Main Cabin Extra" premium economy seats. Business class on these aircraft will feature lie-flat seats with aisle access, a feature that has been important to the paring down of first class, says blogger Lori Ranson. • TSA conducts random beverage tests
Many travelers may not be aware that the Transportation Security Administration for years has conducted random tests of travelers’ beverages at airport checkpoints. The test involves a TSA agent holding a test strip over the opening of the beverage. After moving the test strip away, the agent drops a solution on the strip. The TSA declined to elaborate on the purpose of the tests other than to say they are part of a plan to make travel safer.
