  • TSA: Faster military screening to be available at 35 airports in 2013
The Transportation Security Administration is working to expand a program that gives service members in uniform and carrying a military ID and signed orders access to faster airport screening. While one lawmaker criticized the TSA for supposedly missing a deadline related to the expansion, Chris McLaughlin, TSA assistant administrator for security operations, said the program would be in place at 35 airports by the end of 2013. "We’re working hard on a daily basis to become a smarter agency," said McLaughlin. Bloomberg Businessweek (7/11) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The scanners are effective up to 164 feet from their targets and can penetrate clothing to reveal explosives, drugs and biological weapons, among other things. The technology will eventually be installed at U.S. airports and border crossings, according to media reports. (7/11), Gizmodo (7/10) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The Transportation Security Administration hopes its PreCheck program will eventually shorten airport security lines for all travelers. The program, which allows travelers who agree to participate in pre-screening to move faster through security, is in place at 18 airports. The TSA hopes it will be in place at a total of 35 airports by the end of this year. "TSA is not here to be an obstacle to commerce. We’re here to be a partner," said Mark Haught, federal security director for the TSA in Charlotte, N.C. (7/12) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
