  • Newark airport will join PreCheck program later this month
The Transportation Security Administration next month will launch its PreCheck program at Newark Liberty International Airport. Travelers participating in the program submit to a background check. If approved, they are allowed to pass through security checkpoints without removing their belts and shoes. The TSA launched PreCheck in October 2011. The Star-Ledger (Newark, N.J.) (9/5) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • TSA has tested travelers’ drinks for five years
The Transportation Security Administration has randomly checked travelers’ drinks purchased beyond security checkpoints for more than five years, according to the TSA. Agents check the drinks using a test strip and dropper with a non-toxic solution. "(Officers) simply have the passenger remove the cap/lid and they hold the strip over the opening of the container," the TSA wrote in a blog post in July. "Procedures call for moving the test strip to the side and applying the solution from the dropper to test the strip. If the test results are positive, TSA will conduct additional testing to make a final assessment." NBC News (9/5) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

In a move to compete with CNN, Clear Channel Outdoor has signed 100 deals for its "ClearVision," to be shown in airports — a market largely dominated by CNN. The agreements will enable travelers to view content from networks such as NBC, CBS and Fox. Next year, Clear Channel hopes to roll out a service to let travelers stream the content on their personal mobile devices. Reuters (9/4) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • NTSB says external cameras would help prevent collisions
The National Transportation Safety Board this week recommended that external cameras or other anti-collision aids be installed on some large planes. Cameras could prevent collisions if the pilot is incapable of seeing the wingtips, according to the NTSB. The NTSB is currently investigating three collisions in which the pilots could not see the wingtips from the cockpit. CNN (9/5) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • FAA will probe science behind electronics interruptions
The Federal Aviation Administration will form a panel to explore the notion that personal electronic devices can interfere with a plane’s communication systems during takeoffs and landings. Some issues on the table include how to make planes resistant to interference and adding monitoring systems that would detect issues.
