  • Proposal would end re-screening of luggage entering U.S. from Canada
Two lawmakers have proposed legislation that would relax security screening for some bags transported from Canadian airports to the U.S. Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., sponsored the bill and said it would make traveling between the two countries easier. “By making baggage screening more efficient for passengers traveling to our country, this legislation will benefit the American tourism industry, while boosting economic development and job creation,” Blunt said. Currently, luggage arriving from Canada goes through the same screening procedure twice. The Hill/Transportation blog (9/14) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • U.K. airport to use "privacy friendly" scanners
After a three-year trial, the European Commission has decided not to approve the use of full-body scanners at airport security checkpoints. At the U.K.’s Manchester airport, the machines will not be used after October. "Everyone involved is happy with them — they are safe, security likes them, and in a recent survey 100% of passengers were satisfied with them and prefer them to frisking," said Chief Operating Officer at Manchester Airport Group Andrew Harrison. Nevertheless, the scanners will be replaced by "privacy friendly" scanners that will not require a security agent to check the images. BBC (9/17) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Blog: Ancillary-fee reports are misleading
Blogger Jim D. says the reports on ancillary fees charged by airlines can be misleading. By comparing 2011 figures to 2000 figures, he estimates travelers spent $2.3 billion less on air travel in 2011 than 11 years earlier. "By decoupling certain services from the price of the fare, airlines have saved consumers a significant amount of money," he writes. "Today, consumers only pay for the services they want and choose, and in the end, everybody is coming out ahead." Ask The Question blog (9/13) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
