  • TSA makes "substantial improvements" at Newark airport
A lawmaker who requested more information on three recent security breaches at Newark International Airport received a detailed, five-page response from the Transportation Security Administration. "Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials at EWR have made substantial improvements to their screening operations to help prevent future security incidents," TSA Administrator John Pistole said in the memo. He also noted that the Newark airport "has improved and streamlined its processes in regard to remedial training and discipline of individuals involved in security incidents." • Denver firm is working on sliding-airplane-seat concept
A Denver-based airplane interior design firm is working on a new, time-saving seat design, this feature says. Molon Labe Designs is working on a prototype of a sliding-seat design, which is intended to cut airplane loading time in half and reduce fuel consumption. The main drawback is that the seat does not recline and has little padding. "I’m not going to tell you it’s a comfortable seat," said Hank Scott of Molon Labe Designs. "It’s a quick, turn-around seat." Los Angeles Times/Money & Co. blog (tiered subscription model) (9/16) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Travel trends in 2013 will center on consumers, industry players say
Panelists at EyeforTravel’s Travel Distribution Summit North America 2012 in Las Vegas last week discussed the top trends they will be monitoring going into 2013. One is the evolution of consumers’ behavior — specifically, their growing shift toward mobile travel planning and booking. "We’re going to see mobile this year represent 35% of all searches. Next year, it will be about 45%. These are outstanding growth rates we can’t ignore," said Tran Hang, head of Google’s travel division. (9/17) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • TSA "committed to world class security" at Florida airport, official says
Transportation Security Administration agents at Southwest Florida International Airport are dedicated to "world class security and world class customer service," writes Robert S. Cohen, federal security director at the airport. He noted that the TSA provides explosives detection dogs, federal air marshals, security officers and behavior detection officers. "While there are currently no specific threats to the Southwest Florida region, we all need to remain vigilant during these challenging times," Cohen writes. "We have the capability to deploy TSA resources, including members of the Federal Air Marshal Service, to any venue with a nexus to transportation." The News-Press (Fort Myers, Fla.)
