  • PreCheck still expanding, taking hassles out of travel
By the end of this year, 35 airports in the U.S. should have the Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck program, which prescreens passengers to provide a less complex inspection at airport gates. The program is open to U.S. citizens traveling domestically who are frequent fliers on Alaska, American, Delta, United, and US Airways, and those who are members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler program. • Will patent add airport security to iPhone’s features?
Apple is set to debut Passbook, a new app that stores e-boarding passes and other documents. But some people are wondering if Apple will do more under its patent for iTravel, which was approved in 2008. The technology would send documents electronically to Transportation Security Administration officers while passengers are waiting in line and have other features that company officials and the TSA are mum about. • Blog: Technology may improve customer service
With American Airlines announcing that its flight attendants will be using personal electronic devices to improve customer service, this blogger suggests it remains to be seen whether the tablets will improve customer service. While there certainly are benefits to the new technology and how it will affect passenger experience, the real impact of American’s new tablets remains to be seen. Ultimately, "improving self-service options and making data more transparent is a [good] thing for customer service." • FAA: Several Fla. airports will have NextGen within 3 years
The Next Generation Air Transportation System will be implemented at airports in central Florida within three years, according to Michael Huerta, acting administrator of the Federal Aviation Association. NextGen, which has been under fire from Congress lately for being behind schedule and over budget, will be implemented at major airports in Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Fort Myers, as well as smaller airports in the region. With the Florida installations, NextGen will save an estimated $23 million annually in fuel costs and reduce air travel by 5.4 million nautical miles per year, reducing annual carbon emissions by nearly 80,000 metric tons.
