  • Indonesian airports testing wireless check-in program
Two airports in Indonesia are testing a wireless check-in program called Mobicheck in an attempt to ease congestion during peak travel hours. The system allows airline agents to roam wirelessly and check in passengers throughout the terminal. So far, the system has reduced flight delays and made the terminal experience more positive for fliers. (10/29) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Former TSA officer guilty of bribery to be sentenced Friday
Former Transportation Security Administration officer Christopher Allen will be sentenced Friday in Connecticut after pleading guilty to taking cash in exchange for allowing a trafficker to bring illegal prescription painkillers through airport security without detection. Allen’s attorney says he was caught after he took the bribe from a person working with the government. • Cutbacks, rebooking struggles are likely to hamper air travel for days
Airline layoffs and cutbacks are further complicating the massive flight disruptions caused by the superstorm Sandy, and travelers should expect cancellations and delays for several days. While most airlines are waiving penalty fees, rebooking has been complicated as many carriers waive fees only if travel is rebooked by Nov. 7. "These are ridiculous travel waiver policies that are trying to force you into rebooking through a very narrow window," said Joe Brancatelli, publisher of business-travel site The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (10/29) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Global ancillary fee revenue is forecast to rise 11% in 2012
Airlines worldwide will earn roughly $36.1 billion in ancillary revenue this year, or around 5.4% of their total revenue, according to a study from Amadeus IT Group. Just under half of the 11% growth in ancillary revenue is due to increased air travel. (10/29) sm_share.gifLinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • EU ministers reject airport slot rule tightening
European Union transport ministers rejected a proposed rule from the European Commission that would force carriers to use airport slots 85% of the time or lose them the following year, up from the current requirement of 80%. The proposed rule was aimed at reducing traffic crunches at major airports. The European Commission says worsening capacity problems could delay as many as half of all EU flights in the coming two decades. • Tools for navigating post-storm flight troubles
As airlines unravel the cancellations and delays caused by superstorm Sandy, air travelers hoping to fly to and from the East Coast may be helped by a new rule the Department of Transportation instituted last January that allows passengers to cancel an airline reservation up to 24 hours after making it. Travelers should check airlines’ homepages frequently, says CEO of Rick Seaney, and set up alerts on their mobile phones to stay apprised of flight status and airport conditions.
