Trends & Technology

Global air travel shows growth in Feb., IATA says

Column: Oil prices hampering growth in air travel
The growth in air travel has not lived up to predictions issued in 2000, writes columnist Joe Brancatelli. “[W]ith energy costs accounting for as much as 40 percent of an airline’s operating budget, oil at today’s price of about $97 a barrel isn’t exactly encouraging carriers to keep fares low,” he writes. “Higher fares don’t motivate many discretionary travelers and they make business travelers much more careful when weighing the value of a trip.” American City Business Journals/Chicago (4/3)

Delta sues to block Ex-Im bank loans to foreign airlines
Delta Air Lines filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Export-Import Bank to block loan guarantees to foreign airlines. “Because Ex-Im Bank loan guarantees lower their cost of capital, these foreign airlines will recoup their investment in their new aircraft faster or reduce ticket prices on competing routes without adversely impacting their relative rate of return on those investments,” Delta said in its complaint. Bloomberg (4/3) Orlando Sentinel (Fla.)
